Fitness and physical health

Updated: Sep 22, 2021

Let's begin by considering some of the key steps you can take in order to maintain good mental and physical health, stay strong, and prevent diseases from occurring.

Eating nutritious meals- as we age we need may need less calories but it is even more important to eat meals that provide nutrients. One example might be adopting a Mediterranean diet consisting of fish, nuts, olive oil, whole grains and limiting high fat items.

The Mediterranean diet is packed with essential nutrients that protect the heart and vascular system and may support brain health .

Drink, Drink, drink- Water! One of the single most important things you can do for your body is to drink more fluids and stay hydrated. How much water do you need daily really depends on your individual needs, health issues, and even the weather. When our bodies hydrated we feel more energetic, it flushes toxins out of our system, it regulates are blood pressure, it aids our digestion and prevents constipation and also helps cushion our joints.

Activity and Fitness not only helps us avoid health problems but it can also help us manage chronic health conditions we already have. If you already swim, golf, or practice Tai Chi and Yoga fantastic! But, not everyone is into fitness hobby so that is where staying "active" is really key. Talk with your Physician about what fitness program is best for you and how much you need.

Be Good to your Brain! Keep Your mind active and prioritize your mental and emotional health. I think we really overlook how we can take steps to nourish and protect our brain as we age. Our brain is actually quite resilient.

Neuroplasticity tells us that age aside our brain has the ability to grow, change patterns and we can train our brains to adapt. We can actually improve neuroplasticity by seeking out new challenges, such as, learning a new language, through creative activity (drawing, writing, etc.) and exploring new places.
